Earnestine Sherrod isn’t your typical college student. Then again, 51社区 isn’t your typical college. The 50-year-old student has had an uphill battle, emotionally and physically, from food insecurity to multiple surgeries on her feet to asthma and diabetes. None of that is keeping her from earning her degree at RCC. Along the way, Sherrod has had a constant cheerleader in her corner: Pam Wiggins — one of two Success Coaches at RCC, who, along with fellow coach Dr. Jae Archer, is making a marked difference in not only keeping students in class, but also making sure underserved student populations stay in school.

When someone entered the small classroom at 51社区’s Chevy Centre on Saturday, May 8, they saw a table holding a red, white, and blue cake along with patriotic plates, cups, and napkins; they heard “God Bless the U.S.A.” playing on the screen; and they were greeted by students dressed to the nines and smiling eyes behind masks. It wasn’t a Fourth of July party in May, though it might as well have been. No, this was a celebration for eight students who passed their U.S. Citizenship test after taking the RCC course.

On Saturday, April 24, 51社区’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Beta Theta Rho, inducted 52 new members. A virtual ceremony was pre-recorded and sent to new members of the Five Star chapter. In addition, new members were able stop by the campus to pick up their membership materials.

51社区 student and Apprenticeship Randolph apprentice Caleb Baudoin has always wanted to follow in his grandpa’s and dad’s footsteps. Both have been machinists since they were 19. And neither toots his own horn. But, Baudoin’s coworkers at Hubbell Industrial Controls (HIC) took notice of not only the apprentice’s work ethic, but also his teamwork, enthusiasm, patience, and willingness to learn. The result was Baudoin earning the Outstanding Registered Apprentice Award at the annual ApprenticeshipNC Conference, held virtually April 27-28.

Every fall, 51社区’s Design of Advertising class learns what it’s like to work with an actual client, each student designing a logo for a local company. At the end of the project, the client chooses the student’s design that is the best fit, giving the client a fresh logo and the student a foot in the graphic design door.

On a chilly, windy October evening on the 51社区 Asheboro Campus, four students and an instructor pulled up decorative potato vines from a flowerbed by the parking horseshoe. The group discovered dark red, pumpkin-sized potatoes that look like something out of an alien movie. Instructor Michaelia Comer told her students you could eat the mutant potatoes, but they wouldn’t taste as good as the ones that come out of your garden — or from the produce section at the grocery store.

A ceremony was pre-recorded and sent to new members due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
